Joshua Hempstead was a New London resident from 1678 until 1758. He wrote in a diary nearly every day of his adult life, a diary that is now used by researchers all over the world. He also raised nine children as a single parent, farmed his land in New London and across the Thames, and played several official roles in the area. Hempstead's home is the oldest structure in New London, built in 1678. He lived his entire life in the English medieval-style farm house, while his grandson, Nathanial, occupied the adjoining stone home. The homes, owned by Connecticut Landmarks, have been carefully restored with colonial furnishings and family artifacts. Step back into colonial times and experience the daily life of the colonists.
