Ye Antientest Burial Ground

Hempstead Street, New London, CT

Take a walk back in time as you visit the oldest colonial cemetary in New London and one of the earliest burial grounds in all of New England. Developed in the mid-1600's, the cemetary was a common burial place, and many of New London's earliest inhabitants, including author Sarah Kemble Knight and local farmer and diarist, Joshua Hempstead, are buried here. Peruse the unique gravestones and imagine what life was like for these colonial settlers. Legend has it that from a site very near the cemetary, one of America's most infamous traitors, Benedict Arnold watched his men torch the city during the American Revolution.
