Be sure to notice the Post Office's "Sistine Chapel of New London." Standing three stories high and taking up a good corner block of Masonic Street, the Post Office is a grand, colonial red brick structure. It is on the inside, however, that the true beauty is found. In 1935, in the midst of the Depression, painter Thomas LaFarger created six murals in conjunction with New Deal policies. The murals depict crews of whaling ships and the heroic spirit these men displayed. Often overlooked, as patrons wait to mail their items, they represent the strength and fortitude that embodied the whaling industry and the city at large.
