New London Elks Names Penny Parsekian Citizen of the Year
The New London Elks Club honored New London Main Street CEO Penny Parsekian as Citizen of the Year during an Awards Dinner on Saturday, March 6.Exalted Ruler Michele Brighton shared with the audience that when the committee reviewed candidates for this honor, Penny stood out as a clear choice for her selfless dedication to the community for over a decade. Mayor Rob Pero was also on hand to congratulate Penny.
Penny was honored for her exemplary record of volunteer work for our community. She was a co-founder of the Trail and Rail Action Coalition (TRAC), Connecticut Chapter, where she served from 1993-2000. She was also a Founding Chair of the Thames Hilltop Neighborhood Association, and served on the state task force on rail service in Connecticut. From 1997 to 2000, she was a member of the Board of Directors of the New London County Historical Society. She was also one of the founding members of New London Main Street and served on the Board before being named Executive Director in 2000. Penny's leadership and continued spirit of volunteerism makes this a well-deserved honor.
The Awards Dinner festivities began with a social hour, followed by a dinner and presentations. Main Street board and staff members joined in the celebration with Penny and her husband, Geoff Kaufman.
Shawn Roach was also recognized as Elk of the Year.
