New London Main Street Intern - Spring 2012
March 19, 2012 blog
As a senior at Eastern Connecticut State University majoring in Communications, its been a great opportunity to complete my internship this spring at New London Main Street. I have been able to gain firsthand experience for things that I have learned so far in my public relations and writing classes. As New London Main Street focuses on revitalizing downtown New London, I have been able to promote their activities and downtown businesses by writing articles for the newsletters and the district website. I am also responsible for posting news and events to the district website. Through this experience so far, I have realized that New London has so much to do more than I ever knew before, and I have been extremely excited to write about it.
So far I have written about the FRESH farm in New London, Sweeties Bakery & Cafe, Devs on Bank Street Chefs Kitchens, and Somaly Hay & Co. I have had the experience of interviewing business owners through emails and in person, and have completed the process of writing articles from rough draft to final editing and proofing. I have enjoyed learning many wonderful stories of how their businesses came about.
Interviewing Samoly at Somaly Hay & Co. was quite the experience, learning of her past as she lived in Cambodia for many years. She visits Cambodia several times each year for her custom clothing designs. At Sweeties Bakery & Café, I experienced the feel of the retro 1950s atmosphere for myself, smelled the aroma of their own roasted ham, and interviewed owners Lyndsay and Aaron. It was exciting to learn of how their business is blooming into something they always dreamed of. I have incorporated into these articles the past and present experiences of these businesses, what they have to offer, and every aspect of what makes them so unique. Each and every one of them brings so much variety and vitality to New London.
I have also worked with Joanne Gibson on the spring 2012 newsletter. I was assigned the Spotlight on Sponsors article which featured law office Suisman Shapiro. It was fun to do some research and conduct some interviews to write the article. Suisman Shapiro is a great supporter of New London Main Street and understands the importance of downtown revitalization. They all had such positive things to say about New London as a place to live and work, and they believe New London Main Street is quite essential to keeping downtown New London moving forward.
This year New London Main Street is applying for several Awards of Excellence through the CT Main Street Center. I was asked to complete the application for the District Map & Guide for the Public Relations and Communications category. This was a good experience for me. I completed the application and created a PowerPoint presentation which was submitted. Through this process, I learned a lot about the distribution for the Map & Guide and how it is an important tool for bringing people downtown.
This internship is not only a requirement for my communications major, but so far it has also been such a great learning experience for me, and I get to do something I really enjoy doing. I cant wait to find out whats in store for me next!
