George Cassidy, the Executive Director of the Connecticut Cruise Ship Task Force, has confirmed that on September 18th and October 9th, the Crown Princess Cruise ship will be docking at the New London port. On Sept. 18th the ship will arrive at 7 am and depart at 4 pm. On Oct. 9th, it will arrive at 7 am and depart at 2 pm. On both dates, as many as 3,070 passengers and 1,200 crew members will be welcomed at the historic Union Railroad Station.

Although cruise ships have been docking in New London since 2002, none managed to make their way here last year, and the Crown Princess ships are the only cruise ships scheduled to make port at this location in 2010. Each ship weighs in at 113,000 gross tons -- more than 24,500 elephants combined! It is 952 feet long, 118 feet wide and 195 feet high with a draft of 26 feet.

New London Main Street volunteers will once again serve as shuttle guides on the buses that transport cruise ship visitors from City Pier to the Union Station Welcome Center. They will share interesting points of history as well as not-to-be-missed spots in downtown New London, enticing visitors to explore The District. Love New London and its history? If you're interested in learning more about this unique volunteer opportunity, contact Volunteer Coordinator Joanne Gibson.

While here, passengers will also have the opportunity to explore Mystic Seaport, Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration, the Essex Steam Train, the USS Nautilus Submarine Museum, Fort Trumbull, and Fort Griswold.

New London locals and area residents can enjoy several exciting events in the downtown area. The Nutmeg Fife & Drum Corps will greet passengers as they arrive at the pier; the Americana Music Festival at the Hygienic Art Park will offer several all-age musical performances and the New London Currach Rowers 1st annual NACA regatta will feature rowing races in traditional Irish boats. Shoppers can visit the Parade Plaza to purchase artisanal goods from crafters, local artists, antique and vintage dealers and community organizations. The U.S Custom House Maritime Museum will also hold a tag sale featuring maritime goods and Captain Treasures will have a huge going out of business sale, featuring a range of items that include antiques, collectibles, jewelry and home décor.
