As part of the second NL Art Night, THE GALLERY AT FIREHOUSE SQUARE is pleased to present an Artist Meet & Greet with Russ Kramer, Steve Lush, Del-Bourree Bach, William G. Hanson and Bob Lagasse featuring Ernest Song presenting acoustic folk music. At 6:30 American Society of Marine Artists Fellow Russ Kramer will give a presentatino about the famous boats, crews, and races that inspire his dramatic oil paintings. The discussion will offer anecdotes about the subjects, as well as a behind-the-scenes-look at the complicated development process of his paintings. Steve Lush, Del-Bourree Bach, Bob Lagasse and William G. Hanson will also be on hand to discuss their art, answer questions and offer insight into their work.

Kente Cultural Center ~ New Londons African American Cultural Center!

African Dolls dressed in various Kente cloth patterns and posed doing village "work", made by crafter Marie Collins. There will dolls for show and to purchase. Marie Collins is a local crafter living in New London.
Kente will have Rhythm For Life featuring Mama Jane and Rick Rucker drumming African Rhythms for the evening.

The Sixth Crossing- Hygienic Art's annual juried exhibition featuring works in all media from regional artists. This year's juror was Janice La Motta, Director at the Billings Forge Community Works in Hartford. The Hygienic will also be hosting John Fries and Craig Edwards at the Hygienic Art Galleries this Friday for the stroll.

Expressiones Cultural Center presents Time In a thematic exhibition exploring the experience of incarceration. Based on the performance piece by Judy Dworin, which portrays women's reappraisals of their lives and identities as they measure and consider the passage of time while serving their sentences. Written during Dworin's first artist residency in 2005 at York Correctional Institution in Niantic, Conn.

The TSETSE Gallery ~ Building Community Through Art!

Butterflies in Motion exhibit. On Art Night, TseTse gallery will release over 100 butterflies into The Gallery! There will be organic flowers for the butterflies to eat, donated from Fiddleheads! The purpose and theme of this exhibit is to celebrate the environment and nature, with an emphasis on going green. So during the month of May the butterflies will be flying freely throughout The Gallery.
NLart Night will also host The Ohio-Freer Collective musical group who will perform all evening and feature artist and guitarist Julio Amaro. Julios Kinoptik Art is part of Butterflies in Motion.The gallery will also have childrens painting classes available where children can paint their own flower pots. Local organization FRESH will use the pots in their Community Garden.
TseTse Gallery uses creative expression to build communities. City Hall Gallery ~ New Londons City Hall has opened its doors to the arts. Many artists from the area have submitted work to hang within City Hall outside the various chambers and rooms.

Face Off: Portraits by Contemporary Artists

This intriguing exhibition will present a wide variety of portraits by artists working in recent years. Once considered retrograde, portraiture has assumed a central role in the art of our time. Artists have turned to portraiture as a major vehicle for addressing issues of identity and gender, race and class, and the advent of the information age. The show includes portraits from the museums collection as well as loaned works by Benny Andrews, Alice Neel, William Wegman, David LaChapelle and Barkley L. Hendricks, among others. Face Off: Portraits by Contemporary Artists will open up new perspectives on the art of portraiture for visitors.

This exhibition presents artworks by some of the most skilled contemporary representational artists working today. Featuring images of New England seascapes ocean views that transcend geography and appeal to everyone, it also includes some outstanding still lifes. The organizing principle of the exhibition is the opportunity it affords the viewer to study how the best contemporary artists depict the changing effects of light in nature whether the subject is a seascape or a still life.
