Don't miss performances from some of our best local musicians!
The RivergodsPropelled by the song writing skills and the harmony vocals of husband/wife team Ben and Nancy Parent, the Rivergods blend acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin, and pedal steel guitar to meander a diverse landscape of American rock, country and folk-tinged music; breaking through the clutter with a brand of roots rock that is fresh, compelling, and uplifting.
The Rivergods have been busy in the studio and are poised to release their latest studio album, Signs. Don't miss The Rivergods performing in front of the Crocker House on State Street. The Rivergods
John Fries & The HeatJohn recently released a live acoustic solo CD John Fries and has been playing non-stop all over New London this past summer. In addition to his solo act, he has a new band "The Heat", with drummer Ron Lewis and bassist Pat Perry. Whether it be playing electric guitar in the now defunct classic rock band Lo-Fi Radio Stars, or in The Original Sinners and being a founding member of the singer/songwriter series The Sinners Circle, this self-taught guitarist's style crosses many musical genres. From accoustic/solo to full-blown electric band, John has entertained audiences with rock, blues, R&B, country and even hip-hop. Be sure to catch John & The Heat on the Parade Plaza at the corner of Bank & State Street.
Denise CannellaDenise has been singing all her life. Before pursuing a career in performance, she studied as a vocalist at Central Connecticut State University, working toward a B.S. in music education. In the eight years since, she has performed, music directed and composed original music for a variety of venues along the East Coast. Currently, Denise has broken gender barrier by performing as a chanteyman at Mystic Seaport Museum and is music director for the Connecticut Renaissance Faire. She is planning to record her first solo album next spring. If you missed her at a recent Previews on Parade, don't miss the chance to hear her at the NL Fire Department. She is even throwing in a few spooky songs in keeping with our theme!
The Mystic Paper Beasts Theatre CompanyThe Mystic Paper Beasts have gained local and international renown for the creation of an extraordinary collection of ingenious masks - and for the whimsy and exuberance of their performances. Founded by Marya Ursin and Dan Potter, each year the company creates several new works, with Marya writing and directing, the masks conceived as a joint venture by them, the masks built by Dan and the painting and costuming of the beasts done by both. They expand their troupe of two, with two to forty local dancers and performers.
Dan is a sculptor, painter and performer. He studied in the U.S., France and Mexicao. He graduated from Harvard University and Harvard School of Design with a master's degree in Architecture. He co-designed the Dragon Egg's rehearsal space with Marya. He loves to dance in and out of his own dreams, and play within those of others.
Marya is co-director for Mystic Paper Beasts and organizing director for the Dragon's Egg with Dan. She is a dancer/mime and yoga instructor, performs with the Beasts and SITU, and is on the faculty of the National Institute at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center, and at the Dance Department at Connecticut College. She has performed for various choreographers and directors in NYC and as a dancer, beasts and mime in thousands of other venues. She is partner to sweet Dan, without whom none of these dragonish dreams would be possible. Mystic Paper Beasts
